ポルシェ911GT3Rは、FIA-GT3レギュレーションに準拠した911GT3 Cup Sの後継モデルで、2009年9月に発表された新型911GT3 Cupをベース車輛とし、ハンドリングと動力性能の向上が図られています。
200ccアップした4リッター6気筒水平対向エンジンは、480馬力を発生し、6速シーケンシャルトランスミッションにより、リア駆動されます。
ワイドトレッド化されたボディは、前後にオーバーフェンダーを設置し先代モデルから大きな進化を遂げています。
